I get it! College can be quite time-consuming.
Fall semester starts with gushing out those busy schedules to meeting multiple deadlines. We often feel a sense of responsibility to complete schoolwork, sometimes making us focus less on our mental well-being. Between attending lectures, completing assignments, volunteering in clubs or events and then balancing a full-or part -time job, of course it can get overwhelming. When we get swamped with so many things, we place our needs at the bottom of our to-do list. Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself or in Donna Meagle’s voice “Treat Yo’ Self.” Thanks to Parks and Recreation for birthing “Treat Yo’ Self”, a day to reward yourself and indulge in exciting things. Shopping for brand-new clothes/fragrances, Visiting a Spa, Restaurant Hopping, Grabbing Mimosas, and the list goes on.... Self-care is key!
With overwhelming school workload, trying to reward yourself is necessary. Bear in mind, you don’t have to splurge on expensive and tedious things. However, take a break and just treat yourself. Here are some ways to “Treat Yo’ Self.”
1. Sleep and Movies: Take advantage of this unique part of the fall semester. Staying healthy and getting enough sleep sounds like a good idea. Unwind in your comfort zone and binge-
watch your favorite TV shows or movies. Even if it’s catching up with shows such as, Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, Mindhunter or Orange Is the new Black .... It’s okay to watch Pitch Perfect the 13th time or solely re-watch your all-time favs. Taking a break to treat yourself will allow you de-stress and clear your mind, as well as provide you with the energy you need to thrive.
2. Shop! Shop! and Shop: Revamp your wardrobe with style. With a budget-friendly mindset, you should be able to get those new outfits, new headphones or Halloween costumes you’ve had your eye on for a while. You don’t need to wreck mayhem on your wallet or buy expensive things. Look out for clothing or merchandise stores that offer student deals and discounts. Shopping arenas to consider include Outlet Collection at Niagara, Canada One store in Niagara Falls, and Seaway Mall in Welland and the Pen Centre mall.
3. Visit a Spa
Have you been waiting for some time at the Spa? Well, this is a chance for you to unwind and get therapeutic treatments like massages, facials, manicures or pedicures. It’s beneficial to break out of your school routine and treat yourself to a day of relaxation at the spa. Zone out, lighten up and prepare to be pampered with absolute care.
4. Dinner with friends
Use this time to hang out with close pals. Grab fun card games (Cards Against Humanity) this
weekend and play in style. Chat away and catch up around the table for the whole evening.
5. Visit exciting places and attend festivals in the Niagara Region/outside the city
Participate in amusing activities that will benefit your mental and physical well-being. In the Niagara Region, several events will run from October 11-14. You could attend tours and events such as the Ball’s falls Thanksgiving Festival, Niagara Falls Fireworks, and Halloween Ghost Tours at Fort George. 6. Distract yourself with compelling novels/books. Stimulate your brain by reading something new and gift yourself an insightful book that refreshes your mind. Reserve few hours to curl up and scram into one of your favorite informational books or health and lifestyle magazines.
By considering treating yourself nicely, I bet you will come back feeling refreshed, energized and motivated. Doing something creative will enable you kick those anxieties and nerves out. Self-care is needed to improve one’s physical, mental and emotional well-being, including enhancing one’s productivity when they get back to work. Give yourself permission to treat yourself today and select activities that you think will have a positive impact on you.
